The Island That Moved
In 2020, scientists discovered something shocking: a small island in the Arctic had moved more than 30 meters from its original position. The island, located near Siberia in Russia, had literally shifted because the frozen ground beneath it was melting due to climate change.
The Arctic is warming two to three times faster than the rest of the world. As temperatures rise, the permafrost — ground that has been frozen for thousands of years — begins to thaw. When permafrost melts, the land above it becomes unstable. Buildings collapse, roads crack, and apparently, even islands can move.
This is a huge problem for the people who live in Arctic regions. In some villages in Alaska, houses are sinking into the soft ground. Entire communities are being forced to relocate because their land is no longer safe. The cost of moving these villages is enormous — sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars.
Scientists warn that as global temperatures continue to rise, the situation will get worse. About 25 percent of the land in the Northern Hemisphere sits on permafrost. If all of it melts, it could release massive amounts of greenhouse gases that are currently trapped in the frozen ground, making climate change even faster.
